Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join a room?

Tap the + button on the Rooms screen, choose "Create a Room", and enter the room name. If a room with that name exists, you'll be added to it. If not, a new room is created.

How do I send a direct message?

Tap the + button on the Rooms screen, choose "New Direct Message", and enter the username of the person you want to message. You'll be taken directly to your DM conversation.

How do I make a video or voice call?

Inside any room, tap the camera or microphone icon in the top bar to enable your video or audio. Other participants in the room will see and hear you once connected.

How do I share my screen?

Inside a room, tap the screen share icon in the room controls. You'll be prompted to select what to share. Other participants will see your screen in real time.

How do I reply to a message?

There are two ways. An inline reply (long-press a message and tap Reply) posts your response in the main room chat with a small quote of the original message above it — good for quick answers. A full thread (tap the thread icon on a message) opens a side panel where a focused back-and-forth lives without cluttering the room; the original message shows a "N replies" indicator so others can jump in.

How do I start a thread on a message?

Tap the thread icon on any message to open the thread side panel, then type your reply. Replies posted in a thread only appear in that thread, not in the main room chat. Everyone in the room can see and join the thread via the "N replies" indicator on the original message.

How do I react to a message?

Long-press a message to bring up the reaction picker and select an emoji. Tap an existing reaction to add or remove yours. If your admin has uploaded custom emoji, they appear in the picker too — you can also type :shortcode: inline in a message to use them there.

How do I edit a message I sent?

Long-press your own message and tap Edit. The message content loads into the input box — change the text and send to save your edit. Edited messages are marked with an "edited" indicator so others know.

How do I delete a message I sent?

Long-press your own message, tap Delete, and confirm. The message is replaced with a "[deleted]" placeholder for everyone in the room.

How do I format my messages (bold, italic, lists, code)?

Use the formatting toolbar above the chat input for bold, italic, strikethrough, lists, block quotes, code, and links. Messages are stored as markdown, so you can also type markdown directly — **bold**, *italic*, `code`, > quote, - list item, etc.

How do I pin an important message?

Long-press a message and tap Pin. Pinning is available to the message's author, room moderators, and the room owner. View all pinned messages in the room by tapping the pin icon in the room header.

How do I create or vote in a poll?

In the chat input area, tap the attachment icon (paperclip) and choose Create Poll. Pick a type (Choice, Meeting, Rank, or Rate), add your options, and post. Room members vote by tapping options on the poll card — depending on the poll's settings, live results may be visible right away, only after it closes, or only to the creator.

How do I upload a file or image?

In the chat input area, tap the attachment icon (paperclip) to select a file or photo from your device. Files are uploaded securely and shared with everyone in the room.

When you paste a URL into a message, the server fetches the page's title, description, and thumbnail and renders a preview card automatically. Tap the card to open the link.

How do I use My Notes?

Tap the "Direct Messages" tab on the Rooms screen and then tap "My Notes" at the top. This is a private space for yourself where you can save links, reminders, or anything you want to keep handy.

How do I control notifications for a room or DM?

Open the room or DM, then open Room Settings (gear icon) and use the notification options. You can silence the room for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, or set it to notify you only on @mentions. Push notifications also require that you've granted notification permission at the OS level.

How do I block someone?

Tap a user's name or avatar to view their profile, then tap Block. Blocked users' messages will be hidden from you and they won't be able to start a DM with you.

How do I update my profile?

Tap "Account" in the top navigation bar. From there you can update your display name, profile photo, and tagline.

How do I change my password?

Go to "Account" from the top navigation, then scroll down to find the Change Password option.

Can I sign in with my work or Google account (SSO)?

If your admin has configured SSO on this server, the login screen shows a "Sign in with …" button. Tap it, authenticate with your provider, and you'll be returned to the app signed in. If you don't see an SSO button on the login screen, it isn't enabled on this server.

How do I see and sign out of my other devices?

Open Account from the top navigation, then tap Logins. You'll see every active session (mobile, web, desktop) with the last-used time. You can revoke individual sessions or revoke all sessions other than your current one — useful if a device is lost or you suspect your account was used elsewhere.

Is there a desktop app?

Yes — there are Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop builds (based on Electron) published alongside server releases. Ask your admin for the download URL for this deployment; the app works the same as the web client but runs in its own window.

What is end-to-end encryption (E2EE) and how does it work?

E2EE ensures that only the members of a room can read its messages — not even the server can decrypt them. To use it, first set up your encryption keys in Account settings. When you create a room, you can enable E2EE for that room. The room creator's device generates a shared room key and distributes it to each member's device automatically. Important: if you join an E2EE room or log in on a new device, another member who already has the room key must be online so their device can securely share it with yours. Until that happens, you won't be able to read or send encrypted messages in that room.
